Chapter Seventeen
The wind whipped between the buildings as they walked down the street. Tess pulled her red coat around her closer and put her head down as she moved alongside Jack on the sidewalk.
âWe couldâve stayed inside for lunch.â Jack dug his hands into his pockets.
The wind blew her hair into her face when she looked over at him. There was a sudden urge to touch the long, blonde curls. However, it vanished when she reached up and pushed her hair away. Her overly expressive face looked at him as if he was an idiot.
Neither one made any reference to the conversation that took place outside their office two weeks earlier. If she had thought about it since, she gave no indication.
She let out a sigh. âAre you kidding me? The cafeteria is so not going to have anything decent to eat the day before Thanksgiving. Isnât being caught in this wind tunnel more fun?â Her smile gave him reason to believe she did prefer to be outside walking.
They turned the corner, and silently walked the remainder of the way to the restaurant. The only word exchange was when they walked by a store and she asked if he would mind stopping, on the way back to the office, so she could pick up some candles.
The restaurant was more crowded than usual and they had to wait for a table. Tess leaned close to him, and whispered, âLook at the shopping bags. These people are getting an early jump on Christmas shopping.â Her mouth was so close to his face. He felt her warm, minty breath on his skin.
He couldnât think with her being so close. All he had to do was turn his head and their mouths would touch.
As if reading his thoughts, she stepped back. âYes, well, weâre one of the few sadistic ones who decided to work this afternoon. Iâll return a few more emails after lunch and then Iâm out of there.â
âSpeaking of which,â he said, to banish the thoughts stirring through his head, âwhy did you decide to come in today and not work from home?â
âAnd miss our regular Wednesday lunch? Of course I forgot Bruce was off today,â she said with a bright smile.
Their time together was becoming more difficult for him. The more he was around her, the more he wanted her. He needed to find a way to get her out of his system. Maybe he needed to date like she was.
A woman and her teenage daughter, on their way out of the restaurant, walked by and bumped Tess with their large shopping bags. She fell against him and he instinctively reached out to grab hold of her arms. Her body briefly pressed up against his. He felt her stiffen before she pulled away. âIâm sorry,â she said.
They were saved from the moment of awkwardness when the nasal young man acting as their host said, âFollow me to your table, please. Whereâs your friend, today?â
âHe took today off,â Tess answered.
They were becoming known to the staff and were shown to their usual booth.
